Chapter Twenty-Seven

Warmth surrounded Kendra, sensations of soft stroking hands that were glorious. Every part of her body absorbed the long tantalizing caress, came alive beneath the questing fingers. With a soft sigh she gave herself up to the wondrous feelings. Slowly opening her eyes, she found Geoffrey lying next to her, his strong body entangled with hers, and she smiled dreamily. His arm was lying possessively across her waist as he touched her. One of his legs was slightly bent, resting between hers with a familiarity that gave proof of the intimacy their relationship.

"Geoffrey...." Instinctively she reached out to him and he responded, taking her into the warmth of his arms.

"I am sorry that I am so late in coming to you." Compulsively his fingers closed around hers. Lifting her hand to his mouth, he pressed his lips against the palm of her hand.

Looking towards the window, Kendra was surprised by the light. "It's morning." Geoffrey was propped up on one arm, his bare chest illuminated by the soft rays of newly awakened sun.

"Aye. Thomas and I had a thousand things to discuss. I'm sorry....."

She kissed away his apology. "You came to me. That is all that is important. I was afraid...."

"That I wouldn't?" He rested his chin on the top of her head, his arms holding her close against his heart.. "There is nothing in this world that could keep me from your side, ma petite."

It was early in the morning. Westminster was still and quiet. The soft glow of sunlight cast a golden glow over the lovers. Even so, Kendra could read the worried furl to Geoffrey's forehead. A dark curl had fallen across his wide brow and she reached up to brush it away.

"Something is troubling you. Tell me....."

"The same thing as before. Reynard. De Moreville. Fitz Urse. They are stirring up trouble." He clenched one hand into a fist, then relaxed it again. "But I do not want you worried by what is happening. We will talk of other things. It isn't fair to bother you with matters of state."

"It isn't fair not to." Kendra brought his hand to her cheek and rested it there. "What concerns you, concerns me. I love you, Geoffrey. I do not only want to share in your happiness, but in your troubles too. That is just as much a part of love."

There was a glow in his eyes as he gazed down at her. "Yes, I suppose it is but...."

"Tell me. Even if I can not help at least I can listen and that in itself is often soothing, to know at least that someone has heard you." Sitting up, she cupped his shoulders in her hands, gently massaging his muscles in a motion she had enjoyed many times from him when she was tense or disquieted. Feeling him relax beneath her touch was her reward.

"Reynard and his allies are arguing that Becket's election was improper."

"Improper?" Kendra paused in her motions, then continued again. "How?"

"Reynard has bandied it about that
